I realise there's something incredibly honest about trees in winter, how they're experts at letting things go.
~ Jeffrey McDonald The earliest tree-like organisms grew in forests in the Carboniferous period and their oldest fossils are dating back about 385 million years ago. Category: Diary Landscape I was surprised, as always, be how easy the act of leaving was, and how good it felt.
The world was suddenly rich with possibility. Jack Kerouac: On the Road Jack Kerouac (1922-1969) was an American novelist and poet. He is considered a literary iconoclast and, alongside William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, a pioneer of the Beat Generation. Kerouac died on October 21, 1969 (aged 47), so today marks the 45th anniversary of his early demise. You sure do make it like a sunny time Sunflower, sweet morning For every time I'm gonna make you mine Glen Campbell: Sunflower Category: Landscape The High Tatra Mountains are a mountain range that forms a natural border between Slovakia and Poland. They are the highest mountain range in the Carpathian Mountains.
The highest peak called Gerlach, at 2,655 m is located north of Poprad. The highest point in Poland, Rysy, at 2,499 m is located south of Zakopane. The Tatras are protected by law by the establishment of National Parks in their territory, with membership in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO. In my memories are these mountains very often associated with a cult film named ’The Copper Tower’, directed by Martin Holly (1931-2004), and released 44 years ago, in August 1970. It is a bitter comedy about friendship, a balladic story of three friends, whose lives are hit by a femme fatale. Category: Landscape Ladies and gentleman, this is your stewardess speaking. We regret any inconvenience the sudden cabin movement might have caused. This is due to periodic air pockets we encountered. There's no reason to become alarmed and we hope you enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?
This is a famous quote from the film Airplane! - written and directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker. The crew of an airplane comes down with a severe case of food poisoning; the fate of the passengers depends on an ex-war pilot who is the only one able to land the plane safely. Category: Diary Landscape This image reminds me of two things. The first is the recollection of my former workplace. On the horizon you can see the high tower. Below it spreads a complex of buildings, full of television and radio transmitters. So this is a place where I had worked in the 1970s.
The second thought is connected with a rich history of mining in that area, which began a long time ago, sometime in the early 17th century. Dubnik opal mines were the only opal mines in Europe and the oldest place in the world where this colorful gem was regularly mined. This photo was used in the book that describes this important mining locality and history associated with it. If I get up early in the morning and sun appears between two towers on the horizon, I exactly know that it is 05:05 of Local Time, and it is May 21. I made the precisely identical image on the same day and at the same time in 2013 and 2012. Hooray, I have my own Towerhenge!

Some cloudscapes, or clouds, feature such an array of color and arrangement of form that the result is beauty beyond description. To boost more drama from the light, forms, shapes and shadows, I very often prefer black and white processing. The magic of clouds is, that they are ephemeral, always changing, disappearing into invisible vapor, and reappearing in visible form. When shooting cloudscapes it’s very important to keep your camera very still, use a polarizing filter and set your aperture at least at f/11. Very photogenic and with a lot of drama are next two forms of clouds. Cumulus congestus clouds are a form of cumulus cloud and they are typically taller than they are wide, often characterized by sharp outlines. Cloud tops can reach 6 kilometers (20,000 ft). In slang they are also known as Turkey tower. Cumulus congestus clouds are characteristic of unstable areas of the atmosphere which are undergoing convection. Cumulonimbus is a dense towering vertical cloud associated with thunderstorms and atmospheric instability, forming from water vapor carried by powerful upward air currents. Cumulonimbus progress from overdeveloped cumulus congestus clouds and may further develop as part of a supercell.
